So this has happened to me a few times when updating WordPress. Basically, my folder permissions weren’t set up correctly and my WordPress upgrade fails for one reason or another. I fix the permissions and then try to upgrade again, only I’m greeted with a white screen with the message ‘Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.’ Not too much of an issue except there’s no way out of it. After a quick Google search I found a few helpful posts stating that all I had to do was ftp into the account, navigate to the root folder of my web directory and delete a file called: .maintenance

Also fairly simple to do….except, I could never find the damn file! After some more Googling, I came across another helpful post stating that the file was hidden.

Depending on the mood I’m either on a Windows machine or my iMac. This time I was on my iMac, using CyberDuck. In order to see hidden files on CyberDuck you have to click on View up on the menu bar and then choose Show Hidden Files.  Voila….the .maintenance file showed it’s ugle head.   Once deleted, everything worked perfectly.
